The bunker is a hazard that strikes fear
into the heart of most golfers but this is a problem that
can be overcome by adopting the correct technique, therefore the following information may help.
The ball position remains the same as a chip shot but the your stance must be open to the target point (with the club face aligned to the target point) thus creating a swing movement that cuts across the ball position, i,e. from outside the target line to inside the target line.
It is not the ball that you are aiming to hit in a bunker shot, it is the sand underneath the ball that you are trying to move -- as the sand explodes it pushes the ball out of the bunker - therefore you need to hit the sand just behind the ball to achieve this objective.
Address.
With the bunker shots it is important to lower the whole body at the address by bending the legs more, but importantly I hold this lower position throughout the bunker shot ( I use a 60 degree Loft)
This will allow a shallower approach to the ball, but you must continue to accelerate the club head past the ball and in a downwards trajectory after the club head has struck the ball.
The first tip to remember
is that when playing from a bunker is to open the stance
slightly.
In addition, at the address
position the feet should line up to the left of the target
whilst the club face should be facing the target.
The Swing.
Carry out a normal golf
swing, but ensure that the club head swings across the front
of the body with a slicing action but also with a downward action through the ball as if you are swinging to the bottom of your swing arc.
However as you perform the golf swing you must focus your
eyes on the spot that you want the club head to hit the
sand which is about two inches behind the ball
Furthermore and most importantly, you must ensure that the
swing is a constant accelerating slicing movement right
through the contact area.
Failure to accelerate the
club head through the contact area will only leave the ball
in the sand trap.
You must make a full and
powerful golf swing in order to succeed.
